Urbanist.ca provides articles, technical discussions, and editorials on the subjects of urban design, sustainable urbanism, New Urbanism, Smart Growth, the SmartCode, and Form Based Codes. Hosted by Calgary-based urban designer Geoff Dyer, urbanist.ca covers both the broader re-emergence of urbanism in North America as well as more regionally specific editorials on Calgary, the Western Provinces, and the North American West in general.
Unless otherwise noted, the majority of the material presented on urbanist.ca originates from the works of Geoff Dyer. The site also features a number of co-authors, guest authors, and material from companion sites.
Urbanist.ca also serves as a portal to Geoff’s ongoing portfolio of design work.

Based in Calgary, Alberta, Geoff practices throughout North America in the field of urban design with a focus on sustainable urbanism, physical design, and the reform of the outdated land use regulations of the last century. A principal and director with U.S. based Placemakers llc and the Principal of Placemakers Canada, Inc, urbanist.ca serves as Geoff’s “local” base for advancing the reemergence of urbanism in the North American West.
